A Stirling engine is a heat engine that operates by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas, the working fluid, at different temperature levels such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work. The engine is like a steam engine in that all heat transfer takes place through the engine wall. This is traditionally known as an external combustion engine in contrast to an internal combustion engine where the heat input is by combustion of a fuel within the body of the working fluid. Unlike the steam engine's use of water in both its liquid and gaseous phases as the working fluid, the Stirling engine encloses a fixed quantity of permanently gaseous fluid such as air or helium. As in all heat engines, the general cycle consists of compressing cool gas, heating the gas, expanding the hot gas, and finally cooling the gas before repeating the cycle. Originally conceived in 1816 as an industrial prime mover to rival the steam engine, its practical use was largely confined to low-power domestic applications for over a century. The Stirling engine is noted for its high efficiency (up to 40%), quiet operation, and the ease with which it can use almost any heat source. This compatibility with alternative and renewable energy sources has become increasingly significant as the price of conventional fuels rises, and also in light of concerns such as peak oil and climate change. This engine is currently exciting interest as the core component of micro combined heat and power (CHP) units, in which it is more efficient and safer than a comparable steam engine. Stirling engines (especially free-piston types) are also being considered by NASA for use in space exploration. From Wikipedia under the

Q. i have to design a stilring engine of known power. what is the design method? or design process? or equations usesd. i nedd technical details plz Asked by fconspiracy - Sun Jun 15 15:09:45 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. technically, Answered by gomez - Sun Jun 15 17:45:23 2008 Does anybody have any idea, where the f*ck I can buy a Stirling Engine from, and not in the next decade. Q. All these Stirling engine manufacturers; SES, infinia, sunpower, you name it... say that they can't give you any engines until next year... What happened to right now? What is your motto here, boys inform all your classmates, hide your a*ss; anything short of that, we're going to burn you at the stake. Well, gentlemen, when the s*hit hits the fan, it's better to hide. This is such a crock of s*hit. Well, there is only 2 options: Make them an offer they cant refuse... or, accept the facts, you can't live the american dream without oil... Does anyone have any better ideas? It is not necessary to be an excellent machinist - only that you have access to a decent machinist and hardware store, or a kit. nevertheless: This one is available: it is an educational demo but comes with all the controllers: This is where you get directions to do a 5hp yourself: sometimes if you want to run at the front of the pack, you gotta be prepared to break trail :) Answered by Gina C - Tue Aug 5 05:44:20 2008 I've invented a true Rotary Stirling Engine. What's the next step?
Q. I don't have a functional prototype because I don't have machining capabilities right now, but it's a very simple design. How do I "sell" my idea? I can't afford a patent lawyer. Asked by Platypus - Sat Jan 17 15:18:15 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Create a paper document with all relevant information, drawings, equations, etc. Make a few copies of this document. Put one copy in an envelope and mail it to yourself return receipt required. when you sign for the document do not open the envelope but store in a safe place, such as a safe deposit box, with lab notebooks and other documentation. This is not a patent, but can provide valuable evidence if you are challenged on priority.
