A. I just looked in the latest issue of Hemmings Motor News and found a couple of sources of new and used M-B parts. The place is called Potomac European and they have a toll free number (1-800-275-4405). If the customer has 68-71 280 SE & SL, 72-89 450, 480, 380, 500, 90-98 300, 320,500, 60-99 220D, 240D, 300D, TD,300SDL E, 300D-TD, 81-91 280, 380, 500, 560 SEL & SEL Coupe, 92-99 S 320,420,500,600 there is a "parting out M-B" ad with an email address of martinito-motors.com and a phone number (305)751-4741 which may or may not be helpful. Good luck!

How can I identify Chevy Vortec heads if I am out in a wrecking yard?
Q. How can I identify Chevy Vortec heads if I am out in a wrecking yard?
Asked by friend robert - Thu Jul 17 14:18:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The easiest was to identify the Vortec heads is the intake bolt holes. They have a unique intake manifold bolt pattern. They only use 8 bolts instead of the usual 12 for a small block Chevy and all the bolt holes are drilled vertically instead of at an angle. They also have a "sawtooth" pattern casting mark on the accessory end of the head that looks like 3 triangles.

how do i get rid of a huge ivy plant that's taken over my back yard and wrecking the walls of my house?
Q. i know i need to cut it down but how do i stop it from growing back?

A. Cut as much as you can down and then buy a quantity of copper nails from any good hardware shop. Hammer them into the main trunk/root system and it will soon die off. Most small trees/bushes cannot survive any quantity of copper being fed into the rising sap and will completely expire. I had exactly your prob - I know - I did - I succeeded !!! Be careful tho to re-prepare the soil shud you wish to grow anything else around that area. Good luck ! W

A. Look in the Yellow Pages under Auto Salvage and Recycling or Junk Dealers. If you don't have a title, just move to Indiana. Our new law does not require a title to junk out a car. So now we have 'renegade wreckers' towing cars that have gone out on folks. By the time you get back to your car it has been towed to a junk yard and is gone! A really SMART move by our legislators!

A. Not too sure about sony's policy on this one, you will need to contact them. Sometimes it is a combination of buttons on the head unit and remote. Or you can sit there and go through the numbers one at a time. I have done this several times.

used engine from japan or buy from wrecking yard?
Q. I have a 98 nissan altima with a blown motor. should I buy a used engine/tranny from Japan. There is a local business here that imports them and sells them with a one year warranty. they claim they have 30,000 to 60,000 miles on them. Or should I buy from the local yard its got 80,000 with a six month warranty. Prices are a wash so im more interested in what would be the best investment. just to clarify the japan motor is sold from a local business. they have it in stock and do take returns if necessary they are 200 more. I just wonder if someone fwould maintain a car that they know must have a motor replacement in a couple of years

A. I have installed one of the engines from overseas in a customers car. No problems what so ever. There are some goofy laws in some country's over seas that wont allow a engine with over a certain number miles on it to be used any longer. I believe its an emissions thing. So they are good running engines.

What are some of the things to look for if I pull an engine at a wrecking yard.?
Q. I have a 1990 Chevy Celebrity with a knock in the engine. I have put a lot of work into the car but not a lot of money since parts are cheap. So rather than buy a new car I want to pull and engine and pay someone to rip out the old one and install the new used one. other than the color of the oil and signs of leaks what should I be looking for when picking an engine to pull. Kitty I know for a fact it is a rod that is knocking. If I had the money to buy a rebuilt or new engine I would. I am going to try to find a totaled car. The engine in my car was used in a Buick up to 2005, so I am hoping to score one with low miles. Thank you for the info Suspension notice, I actually know how to hot wire a car thanks to the mercury I own. I just have… [cont.]

A. If it is in your yard... not on hwy property... call and have it towed away and tell them to bill the car owner. If it is on hwy property, the police should be taking care of it.

What is my wrecked car worth to an auto salvage yard?
Q. My 1994 Dodge Intrepid was in prefect running condition, I was in my car at the traffic light when I was rear-ended and the car was totaled out. Now I have to get rid of it and thought an auto salvage yard might want it for parts. But I don't know what to sell it for. Does anyone have any idea? The Salvage yards are in a rural area of Louisiana. Please help. Oh yes, it has about 170,500 miles on it.

A. I wouldn't expect anything for it. I know that in the area I live in or further into the country/ quebec there are a lot of mechanics who own garages and buy cars just like this to fix up and resell. I would go try and find something like that first since they may give you upwards of 300-500 for it. You would need to cover towing though if they don't have their own truck. (In all honesty though a towing fee isn't much) However here is a list of things you could probably salvage yourself and are all very easy to take off the car. Also my estimated prices but go on ebay or something and check out what they're actually selling for: Catalytic converter: easy to remove, $100-250 Mass airflow sensor: even easier to remove, $30-70 Battery:… [cont.]

Why can't you take possession of an abandoned car but the city or wrecking yards can and sell it at auction?
Q. Why is it ok for a city or Towing Company/Wrecking Yard, to take an abandoned car, from a house that is empty and for sale for 5+ years and re-sell the car at an auction; but you yourself can not take the same car from the same house that is up for sale? Why can't you take possession of it, but the City/Towing Company can? What's the difference with me taking it? Lets say the owners of the car moved out of state and can be found or contacted. They abandoned it and never came back for it over the next 5-7 years. Why can't I take the car? I can go to the State DMV and get the title retitled in my name right. The city does that. Why can't I do the same.

Q. Im going to be going to the wrecking yard to find a ford 5.0. I just need the short block no heads or intake. Since the motor's are in the junk yard still installed in the cars or trucks. A. Honestly, most likely you won't find a junkyard that will let you strip the heads off of an engine out of a car. If the engine is good, they will usually have pulled it themselves, and will only sell it whole. Most of the larger junkyards have a short block scrap pile, but these engines have usually been sitting outside and have rusted bores. If they have been sitting with the deck up, they usually have had rain water get in them and freeze, cracking the block (depends on what part of the country you are in). Chances are, these short blocks weren't any good in the first place, and are there for people looking for parts, such as blocks, etc. My suggestion would be to find a good overhauled short block from an auto parts store, or comb… [cont.]

After being served an eviction notice, my landlord threw my belongings in the yard. Legal?
Q. After eviction landlord and neighbor came into the home and removed my stuff as well as a lot of her belongings. They threw my stuff into the carport and fornt porch as well as the yard. I spent 13 hours picking stuff up and trying to get her property separated from mine. The second day she had my car towed after she agreed not to take that action. From the time my stuff was put outside until she towed my car was not even 48 hours. We had law not letting us load up anything because she was not present. When she arrived they let us load up items, but time was wasted and my car is at some wrecking yard and I have no money to get it back.

A. You don't state how long after receiving the "eviction" this incident occurred. Normally each state has a specific number of days allowing you time to vacate! If you've gone beyond the time permitted...you're fighting a losing battle. If not...then you have an issue through the court system!
