Salvaging a boat in the Bay?
Q. There is a boat washed up on shore, but it is not completely on dry land. I cant think of the best way to free it. It is in the bay so the water is not too deep but no less than 5 feet. I would say the boat is between 30 and 40 feet and looks like it has an inboard or inboard/outboard engine. I am not worried about damaging the propeller or hull im just thinking about how I could free it to maybe salvage it. nobody has come to claim it in about 6 months and i though it would be a fun project to free it and maybe fix it.

A. A beached boat is not the same as a sunken boat when it come to salvage.. First check the registration. To free a boat this size is work. You can use a large anchor as a dead man and have friends pull on the line while you pull with another boat. It may require poling from the bow as well. Hope you have lots of friends to help, like 6 or 8 of them. Other means would be if you can get this boat started and use it's power to help free it. My dads 24 foot cabin cruiser ran aground and we used the anchor, me pulling the line while he ran the engine in reverse. Took about a half hour to free it.

Does it still apply that it depends on who throws the rope as to salvage ?
Q. Perhaps this only still works on the high seas, in that if the dead in the water vessel sends you a tow-rope, you can claim salvage, but if you throw them a line, you can't. Pedantic, I know, but I applied this old ruling last week when I encountered another narrowboat with a knackered engine, and gave them a tow to the next boatyard. He offered me a fair bit of cash, but I settled for a steak and a few beers. Thing is, I pointed out that he threw me his bow line, so technically his boat was mine as salvage. Had I thrown him a stern line, that doesn't apply. I know that this is probably not applicable anymore, but I beleive it it still in the rule books. Any notions ? Bob

A. Other way about Bob - if he takes your rope it is deemed that he has accepted "Loyds open" (a form of standard contract for the salvage of a vessel, which, subject to no further damage being incurred, would reward the salvor with about 35% of the value of the salvaged vessel). If you accept his rope to give him a tow,it is assumed you have made your own agreement. A steak and a few beers is not bad payment, under the circumstances - you never know when you might need a hand yourself !

Hypothetical question: You, your best female friend and best male friend are in the middle of the sea in an?
Q. inflatable boat. Imagine your real friends in real life in your mind before you read the next para. Suddenly all but one compartment of the boat got torn and both your friends are in the water. The part of the boat can carry one more person. You have only two choices - all three of you die or two of you survive on the salvaged part of the boat. Who will you pick? What is your gender?

A. I let my two friends survive of course.
