Q. here is the story.. Well a boat was giving to my boyfriend 2 yrs ago. A boat that has been sitting in someone's back yard for over 5 yrs. The lady that live at the house doesnt claim the boat. The persoon that gave it to my boyfriend was his best friend in which the person that gave to his best friend past away. No title was EVER exchanged. The boat is just going to waste. We would like to pursue the process of getting the boat. Does ANYONE out there know what could me possibly do to get the boat in our name. Perhaps a salvage title?? I hope this all makes sense. Thnx!!

A. If the boat has numbers on it, you can check with the DNR or DMV, ot which agency handles titles in your state, and they can tell you who is the owner. If that person has passed away, it's nearly impossible to get a title. If you can track the owner down, he/she can get a duplicate title and sign it over to you. An Abandoned boat title is hard to get. You must send a letter to the last known address, and then wait for a response. If no response you might have to run an add in the newspaper. Then you can go to the title agency and fill out an affidavit that says that you tried to contact the owner and couldn't and how you came into possession of the boat...They might grant you a provisional title or not. t can take 6 mo. to a year… [cont.]
