A. I just looked in the latest issue of Hemmings Motor News and found a couple of sources of new and used M-B parts. The place is called Potomac European and they have a toll free number (1-800-275-4405). If the customer has 68-71 280 SE & SL, 72-89 450, 480, 380, 500, 90-98 300, 320,500, 60-99 220D, 240D, 300D, TD,300SDL E, 300D-TD, 81-91 280, 380, 500, 560 SEL & SEL Coupe, 92-99 S 320,420,500,600 there is a "parting out M-B" ad with an email address of martinito-motors.com and a phone number (305)751-4741 which may or may not be helpful. Good luck!

Q. How can I identify Chevy Vortec heads if I am out in a wrecking yard?
Asked by friend robert - Thu Jul 17 14:18:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The easiest was to identify the Vortec heads is the intake bolt holes. They have a unique intake manifold bolt pattern. They only use 8 bolts instead of the usual 12 for a small block Chevy and all the bolt holes are drilled vertically instead of at an angle. They also have a "sawtooth" pattern casting mark on the accessory end of the head that looks like 3 triangles.

A. Not too sure about sony's policy on this one, you will need to contact them. Sometimes it is a combination of buttons on the head unit and remote. Or you can sit there and go through the numbers one at a time. I have done this several times.

Train wreck yard in central Florida area or even within the United States?
Q. I'm looking for some old train items like road signs or train pieces or rail. I've tried finding somethings online but I can't find an actual place where I can go and walk about. Anyone have any ideas where I can find a car junk yard for trains? Have tried ebay but the few things I've purchased have not been what they were said to be. I want somewhere I can poke about and actually see the itemto make sure it is real.

A. There is a place in Montana that recycles old rail equipment, scrap yard for metal recycle. It was on Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. What you want does not exist. Old stuff is put in a yard until disposal can be arranged.

A. hi Jess,I think the two previous answers are a good start but for a long term solution and to save a little money for retirement and future vacations from your yard I would have a professional develop a phased master plan that will provide you with an environment that will require little or no maintenance but also enhance and compliment your outside environment. You are a grandmother and you grew up in the country, maybe you would like to have a low maintenance naturalistic landscape. Once established and properly installed, a naturalistic landscape requires little attention. A local designer or landscape architect can provide you with a maintenance free design that you can truly LIVE with. Take Care and best of everything, Phillip

What is my wrecked car worth to an auto salvage yard?
Q. My 1994 Dodge Intrepid was in prefect running condition, I was in my car at the traffic light when I was rear-ended and the car was totaled out. Now I have to get rid of it and thought an auto salvage yard might want it for parts. But I don't know what to sell it for. Does anyone have any idea? The Salvage yards are in a rural area of Louisiana. Please help. Oh yes, it has about 170,500 miles on it.

A. I wouldn't expect anything for it. I know that in the area I live in or further into the country/ quebec there are a lot of mechanics who own garages and buy cars just like this to fix up and resell. I would go try and find something like that first since they may give you upwards of 300-500 for it. You would need to cover towing though if they don't have their own truck. (In all honesty though a towing fee isn't much) However here is a list of things you could probably salvage yourself and are all very easy to take off the car. Also my estimated prices but go on ebay or something and check out what they're actually selling for: Catalytic converter: easy to remove, $100-250 Mass airflow sensor: even easier to remove, $30-70 Battery:… [cont.]

How can you do you get a compression stroke on a short block?
Q. I pick up a short block from the wrecking yard a 2.7L v6 the go's on a 2001 chrysler sebring convertible 2.7l. But the problem is that i want to set the heads i got from another vechicle. I need to set TDC on a compression stroke, how do i do that? the short block does not have the heads on them. Can anyone help me on this?
Asked by goblue - Thu Sep 18 06:17:51 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your question isn't real clear. Why do you need TDC to be on the compression stroke? If you want to check head clearance all you need is TDC. the stroke doesn't matter. If for some reason it has to be on the compression stroke with no heads you will have to see what position the cam lobes are in. On the compression stroke they would in a position that both valves would be closed.Put a straight edge on the block over the piston to find TDC.

going to the junk yard?
Q. Im going to be going to the wrecking yard to find a ford 5.0. I just need the short block no heads or intake. Since the motor's are in the junk yard still installed in the cars or trucks. How can I test or tell if the short block is in good condition or has good compression? I cant run the engine or turn the motor over for a compresion test. They have no battery's or fuel
Asked by hook in mouth - Tue Feb 27 23:45:04 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Honestly, most likely you won't find a junkyard that will let you strip the heads off of an engine out of a car. If the engine is good, they will usually have pulled it themselves, and will only sell it whole. Most of the larger junkyards have a short block scrap pile, but these engines have usually been sitting outside and have rusted bores. If they have been sitting with the deck up, they usually have had rain water get in them and freeze, cracking the block (depends on what part of the country you are in). Chances are, these short blocks weren't any good in the first place, and are there for people looking for parts, such as blocks, etc. My suggestion would be to find a good overhauled short block from an auto parts store, or comb… [cont.]

What are the steps to repainting a mirrorr housing?
Q. Had to replace LH door mirror housig. got a replacement mirror from a wrecking yard, its a different color than the car. Do I need to sand off the clear coat or just scuff it up for painting. Can you paint over clear coat? What grit sandpaper do I use? Its on a 01 Honda accord
Asked by DavidB - Fri Aug 7 23:26:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You will want to sand it with a wet sanding paper, around 1000 grit. You can paint over the clearcoat if you go over it with the paper. If you sand down to the plastic you will want to use a primer before the color coat. Clean with alcohol before painting. If the clearcoat shows signs of peeling, sand it off with a coarser paper and then clean up with the 1000 grit.

How do you try to buy or bid on totaled vehicles by car insurance companies?
Q. I m interested in trying to find a vehicle like mine, but wrecked with a good engine and transmission and any other parts I can salvage to keep mine alive for a few more years . I would like to know in general how to search and bid on wrecked vehicles that have been totaled by insurance companies and are now up for bid. This would be kind of like what a wrecking yard must do to purchase vehicles for parts resale, or a used car dealer that would in turn repair the vehicle and resell with salvage title. Any leads on where to start would be appreciated

A. Ask your insurance agent. He should be able to tell you what they do with the totaled cars. A lot of the time they have salvage yards take them or auction them off at a local auction. Good luck and hope you find one.

After being served an eviction notice, my landlord threw my belongings in the yard. Legal?
Q. After eviction landlord and neighbor came into the home and removed my stuff as well as a lot of her belongings. They threw my stuff into the carport and fornt porch as well as the yard. I spent 13 hours picking stuff up and trying to get her property separated from mine. The second day she had my car towed after she agreed not to take that action. From the time my stuff was put outside until she towed my car was not even 48 hours. We had law not letting us load up anything because she was not present. When she arrived they let us load up items, but time was wasted and my car is at some wrecking yard and I have no money to get it back.

A. You don't state how long after receiving the "eviction" this incident occurred. Normally each state has a specific number of days allowing you time to vacate! If you've gone beyond the time permitted...you're fighting a losing battle. If not...then you have an issue through the court system!
