can I get a salvage bid from a wrecking yard online for a total loss vehicle?
Q. I am an independent appraiser dealing with automotive claim for insurance companies. I work late and sometimes need to obtain 3 salvage bid on total loss vehicle. to upload my work in a timely fashion I would like to be able to go on a web site for this information insted of calling wrecking yards the next day. Thank you all. I do use IAA and Copart depending on the insurance company I'm working for. Some company do pay for these services and some do not. There is monthly fee involved for these services.

A. I work for a major auto insurance company as an adjuster. We send all of our vehicles to IAA. It might not be as accurate as calling, but you should be able to get a pretty good approximation of a vehicle's salvage value online at their salvage analysis site. There are about 25 different classes of damage, and the option to look at pictures to get a better idea of the true salvage value. All you need is a year, make, model, and general description of the damage (left side, rollover, flood, etc.) and it will give you the average salvage sale amount for all matching vehicles within the last year. I dispatch IAA to pick vehicles up through their website as well. I don't know if it costs anything, as if it is, my company pays for it. I… [cont.]

looking for a wrecking yard that specializes in Mercedes Benz.?
Q. i'm a mechanic in the Austin, TX. area and i'm trying to find a Mercedes Benz part for a customer. i know some wrecking yards specialize in certain types of cars but can't find one in the phone book.

A. I just looked in the latest issue of Hemmings Motor News and found a couple of sources of new and used M-B parts. The place is called Potomac European and they have a toll free number (1-800-275-4405). If the customer has 68-71 280 SE & SL, 72-89 450, 480, 380, 500, 90-98 300, 320,500, 60-99 220D, 240D, 300D, TD,300SDL E, 300D-TD, 81-91 280, 380, 500, 560 SEL & SEL Coupe, 92-99 S 320,420,500,600 there is a "parting out M-B" ad with an email address of martinito-motors.com and a phone number (305)751-4741 which may or may not be helpful. Good luck!

Q. How can I identify Chevy Vortec heads if I am out in a wrecking yard?
Asked by friend robert - Thu Jul 17 14:18:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The easiest was to identify the Vortec heads is the intake bolt holes. They have a unique intake manifold bolt pattern. They only use 8 bolts instead of the usual 12 for a small block Chevy and all the bolt holes are drilled vertically instead of at an angle. They also have a "sawtooth" pattern casting mark on the accessory end of the head that looks like 3 triangles.

I need a climate control module for a car. How do I go about finding one at a wrecking / salvage yard?
Q. Figure it may be a little cheaper and quicker than ebay. Do they tell me what vehicles in my description they have, or do I just show up and they tell me an area to look? I've never been to one.

A. Cut as much as you can down and then buy a quantity of copper nails from any good hardware shop. Hammer them into the main trunk/root system and it will soon die off. Most small trees/bushes cannot survive any quantity of copper being fed into the rising sap and will completely expire. I had exactly your prob - I know - I did - I succeeded !!! Be careful tho to re-prepare the soil shud you wish to grow anything else around that area. Good luck ! W

A. Not too sure about sony's policy on this one, you will need to contact them. Sometimes it is a combination of buttons on the head unit and remote. Or you can sit there and go through the numbers one at a time. I have done this several times.

Can i sell a vehicle to a wrecking yard without current registration in California?
Q. I have a vehicle that won't pass smog and the registration has lapsed. The car's not worth the cost of repairs / registration so i'm thinking about taking it to an auto wrecker (like pick'n'pull) and selling it for whatever they'll give me. Do i have to scrap the title or make the registration current first? Can i just show up at the wrecker with the auto and the title? What's my best bet?

A. hi Jess,I think the two previous answers are a good start but for a long term solution and to save a little money for retirement and future vacations from your yard I would have a professional develop a phased master plan that will provide you with an environment that will require little or no maintenance but also enhance and compliment your outside environment. You are a grandmother and you grew up in the country, maybe you would like to have a low maintenance naturalistic landscape. Once established and properly installed, a naturalistic landscape requires little attention. A local designer or landscape architect can provide you with a maintenance free design that you can truly LIVE with. Take Care and best of everything, Phillip

Why can't you take possession of an abandoned car but the city or wrecking yards can and sell it at auction?
Q. Why is it ok for a city or Towing Company/Wrecking Yard, to take an abandoned car, from a house that is empty and for sale for 5+ years and re-sell the car at an auction; but you yourself can not take the same car from the same house that is up for sale? Why can't you take possession of it, but the City/Towing Company can? What's the difference with me taking it? Lets say the owners of the car moved out of state and can be found or contacted. They abandoned it and never came back for it over the next 5-7 years. Why can't I take the car? I can go to the State DMV and get the title retitled in my name right. The city does that. Why can't I do the same.

A. short answer: you may not trespass. the city, however, has authority (and duty) to enforce state "unregistered vehicle" laws.

How can I remove a door lock/handle assembly from a car?
Q. The passenger car door lock on my car (1991 Mazda 626) is broken. A locksmith said that I would have to replace the door handle and lock together, and that the best place to get a replacement was a wrecking yard. Calling several wrecking yards indicated that if I wanted to get such an item from their yard, I would have to remove it from the car myself. I do not know how to do this. Any suggestions?
Asked by bonzo_dog - Mon Mar 30 19:10:41 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A bit complicated, you must remove the inner door trim panel to access nuts to remove door handle. Bring a flashlight. There are also plastic clips that hold the lock and handle rods. Be extra careful removing them because hard to find replacements. Take out the assembly, then you can replace the lock. You will have to get the replacement lock re-keyed by a locksmith to work with your key. Do this before installing in your car.

What are the steps to repainting a mirrorr housing?
Q. Had to replace LH door mirror housig. got a replacement mirror from a wrecking yard, its a different color than the car. Do I need to sand off the clear coat or just scuff it up for painting. Can you paint over clear coat? What grit sandpaper do I use? Its on a 01 Honda accord
Asked by DavidB - Fri Aug 7 23:26:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You will want to sand it with a wet sanding paper, around 1000 grit. You can paint over the clearcoat if you go over it with the paper. If you sand down to the plastic you will want to use a primer before the color coat. Clean with alcohol before painting. If the clearcoat shows signs of peeling, sand it off with a coarser paper and then clean up with the 1000 grit.

A. Lots who have camper shells especially will have the stock window taken out and the sliding window put in its place. If you go to the glass shop and ask they may have a perfectly good used one that they can put in for you at less than the price of a new one.

How do you try to buy or bid on totaled vehicles by car insurance companies?
Q. I m interested in trying to find a vehicle like mine, but wrecked with a good engine and transmission and any other parts I can salvage to keep mine alive for a few more years . I would like to know in general how to search and bid on wrecked vehicles that have been totaled by insurance companies and are now up for bid. This would be kind of like what a wrecking yard must do to purchase vehicles for parts resale, or a used car dealer that would in turn repair the vehicle and resell with salvage title. Any leads on where to start would be appreciated

Pull the trigger on this supercharged engine ?
Q. My car blew its motor Option 1: Motor out of a wrecked vehicle, 38k miles , comes with aftermarket supercharger installed, $1,800 . The wrecking yard claims it runs but thats all I have to go off. Option 2: Used or refurbished engine with 1 year warranty for about the same price Which would you go with. For the vehicle assume its whatever you drive.
